Big Tech Companies or Startup, which would you love to work for? Choosing the company to work for is a big decision, as companies can either push your career growth or stunt it. There is no “black or white” in terms of which is better. It all depends on your preference. In today’s writeup, I would talk on three points that are important in any tech career and how a startup or bug tech would affect it.
Recognition
Having the name of a big tech company on your resume is awesome! Big tech companies have international reach and having their names on your resume could give you access to more jobs or educational opportunities. Startups on the other hand are not as widely spread but it’s easier to get recognition for your individual contribution to the company. As well as foster a great relationship with your coworkers.
Upskilling
Big tech companies have some of the best talents in the world. Getting to work with them means that you will have a better chance of learning from and being mentored by brilliant minds. It is also easy to find very niche positions where there isn’t much to do but get a decent pay. With startups, your skills are constantly in use and there’s so much opportunity to learn and collaborate.
Stability
With big tech, there is a form of stability that can’t be provided by startups. With an established model in place consisting of the board of directors, investors and a customer base, the risk of being laid off or not being paid are very low as compared to startups. Some startup founders have to bootstrap their businesses or seek aid from angel investors in a bid to stay afloat.
Work pace
Startups are not constricted by the bureaucracy that comes with dealing with corporations like big tech companies. While there are solid rules and principles on which they run, there is an absence of the intense scrutiny and evaluations that come with decision-making in the corporate world. Hence, startups tend to make faster decisions and work more efficiently because of it.
Whether startups or big tech, each company has its strengths and advantages. It is important to note that the big techs we have now weren’t always BIG. It took time and effort to make the name and resources they have garnered today.
It’s also more important to choose a company based on your interests and I hope these points would serve as a guiding light in your decision 🙂
